March is the month we recognise as ‘Developmental Disability Awareness Month’. In a world where we are increasing our knowledge, diagnosis and aiding of people living with disabilities, we want to show our support wherever possible ✌🏼
The umbrella term of developmental disability includes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cerebral palsy (CP), Down syndrome (DS), alcohol frontal spectrum disorder (AFSD), intellectual disability (ID), spinal bífida (SB), epilepsy and many more ☂️
Each different disability can come with its own set of challenges, but overall the common theme is struggling to engage in neurotypical society, communication or regulation difficulties and forming relationships. With additional supports like equipment, friends and family or allied health teams can see improvements in integration and inclusion in community 👭
These types of disabilities can go unnoticed or undiagnosed, so it’s important to seek external help if you or someone you know may have symptoms and ask your GP for further advice 🩺🧑⚕️
This month, let’s try to listen, learn and advocate together 💚
